This activity teaches figure-ground reversal, one of the foundational principles of visual perception. The student makes the same image twice, once by drawing the thing and once by drawing everything around the thing. Both versions show the figure. The second version shows it through absence. This is a powerful lesson in negative space. Students often find the second version harder. That difficulty is the curriculum content. Drawing what is around something forces you to see the gaps and edges that you usually overlook.
