Teaching can be a lonely business.

Is there any other profession where you spend so much of your day with so many people but do your job alone? It might sound weird but our primary focus here isn't looking for friends – we're actually here looking for people.

The School Kit Manifesto

  • Do good work and share it with people. Find good people who will share the way they work with you. Make the thing that was missing for you in your teacher journey. Find a teacher you admire and talk to them about how they teach. Problem solve with others. Share your enthusiasm. Celebrate the efforts of your fellow teacher.

  • Be passionately curious. Read widely. Watch films. Examine artworks. Be informed. Get your news from more than one source. Think. Learn to ask questions. Break your algorithm. Start conversations with strangers. Know more than you need to about the thing you’re teaching. Know yourself. Be self aware enough to realise the areas where you personally need to learn more. Don’t forget to be a teacher that is also teachable.

  • Story works every time. Search for the narrative, a way of telling that cements the learning in the hearts and minds of your students. Make everything connect. Become the type of storyteller that holds their students spellbound. Story works for any age of student. Story never fails.

  • Every kid in New Zealand deserves to have at least one teacher that changes their life, so go be that teacher. Teach to connect. The act of teaching is the magic. It is teachers (not the tech) that design the most powerful learning experiences. Teach in your way. Find your magic.

  • Find inspiration everywhere. Start by copying what you love then... break it, flip it, stretch it, crack it and turn it inside out till it works better for you. Know our curriculum well enough to connect what you’ve designed with what needs to be taught. Add the tech last. The tech is just the tool, it’s the idea that matters.

We visit 800 schools a year

The Squad isn't just online. We visit 800 schools a year. That means sometime in the next 3 years a School Kit Teacher Champion will call at your school.

Check our visiting schedule. RSVP to the event in your area and we'll reach out to you closer to the time.

Where will we be and when?

At the start of every year we plan our visiting schedule so you can know in advance if we will be in your area. We love a classroom tour and a good coffee recommendation.

You can find our yearly calendar here.

 FAQs

  • Our kits are always free for you to take because we partner with a range of amazing organisations (public and private) and channel their education budgets in effective and interesting ways. The final product is our kits for your classrooms.

  • Our kits are always free. Complete your registration, join our teacher network and you’re on your way.

  • Our kits are free to take but not free to make. We supply our generous kit sponsors with feedback from you as ‘payment’. Our sponsors want to know what you and your students thought of the learning experience, and so do we.

  • All our kits are designed for a class of 32. We know if you are teaching in a MLE space this is not enough so we suggest each Teacher within your space register for the same kit.

  • This is entirely up to you and the type of kit you have decided to teach. Each kit has a comprehensive digital teacher guide that gives you a thorough overview of the ideas and learning in each kit. You can explore this as deeply as you choose with your students, this may depend on things such as their ability and the topic. A good guide is to discuss with other teachers that have or are teaching the same kit within our network. Sharing knowledge is key.

  • Our kits are free to take but not free to make. We supply our generous kit sponsors with feedback from you as ‘payment’. Our sponsors want to know what you and your students thought of the learning experience, and so do we.

  • We will send out an email request for feedback at the end of the Term you received your kit. If you haven’t quite finished with your kit, you can let us know then.

  • Our HQ team works really hard to ensure registrations are processed promptly. Please keep an eye on your inbox as you can expect a confirmation email within a week.

  • Some of our kits are specifically designed for Yr9 and 10 classes. This means you may need more than one kit if you teach more than one class. If this is the case, let us know.

  • You can find a complete schedule of our upcoming kits in the Calendar section of our website. We keep this updated as often as possible and aim to have it available in advance to help with your planning. You can find the calendar here.

  • Drop us a line at hello@schoolkit.co.nz and let us know if you no longer need a resource or if you would like to change your teaching to another term. Alternatively, if you’re already in the School Kit Squad, message one of your hosts directly and we will be more than happy to get that sorted for you.

  • Once you have decided what term you would like to teach our kit in then you can register online here. We will confirm your registration and your kit will arrive the first week of your chosen term ready for you to teach.

  • We have transitioned our resources to our new teacher network app. We refer to this as our Squad HQ and it is a fun space where our resources are available as well as kit teaching support and like minded teachers sharing ideas with one another. You can become a Squad Member here.

  • This could be for a number of reasons that are normally a simple fix. We can help you troubleshoot to solve this and it is best to email us at hello@schoolkit.co.nz
