This activity teaches that a title does work the object alone cannot. The student makes one sculpture from a prompt word, then writes four titles that each reframe the work differently. The same object becomes four different artworks. We understand that the words we choose add context. Students often write titles that describe what their artwork looks like. Push them past description. A title can carry memory, irony, scale, sadness, grandeur. House describes. They only ever went there once tells a story. Both are titles for the same lump of clay. The lump did not change. Everything around it did.
