This activity teaches narrative point of view and the discipline of listening. The student interviews someone from an older generation, then writes the story in the first person. The voice shift is the curriculum content. The student stops being themselves and becomes the person they listened to. Some students will write the story as themselves describing the person. Send them back. The instruction is “I”, not “they”. The before-1975 constraint guarantees the interviewee has decades of memory to draw from. The lesson is that everyone has stories if you bother to ask.
