Close looking
This activity teaches close looking and the work of an art historian. The student becomes a guide. The annotation step is the curriculum content, but the real skill is interpretation. Find the inner voice of what is in the painting and say it out loud. What is the leopard thinking? What might be the angel be muttering? Encourage students to be funny. The Gaze works because the captions sound like a friend leaning in. Humour is a serious tool. It makes a 500-year-old painting feel alive.
