This activity teaches sound as a poetic tool. Words placed close together for their sound create what Paula Green calls chords. The student listens for chords in the words they collect, then writes using them. The read-aloud test is the curriculum content. A poem about a beach should sound a bit like a beach. Students will want to write what the place looks like. Push them past description. Sound makes mood. Play until it lands. The piece is finished when it sounds right out loud, not when it looks right on the page.
