As I Saw It Tuia 250

Character cards reveal 16 different stories of a single day in Whitianga in 1769. Students cross reference and join together key moments to create a multi-faceted version of events. 'Guess Who' boards help students consolidate the story. Writing prompts see students develop their 'character' further before using chosen object (included in the box) to write a point of view story. Finally, students "re-discover" their objects in 2020 and, with video support from the curators of Auckland Museum's Tupaia and the Endeavour Exhibition, create their own museum display.

“So often the history told is the story of the European men that were present. Fantastic to have a resource to support the teaching of New Zealand history, that acknowledges and values the multiple perspectives and stories behind an event.”

What people said.

“This kit has so far been one of the most rewarding units I have seen to come out of school kit so far. It not only guides the class through an important moment in human history but also takes a close look at different perspectives and world views that lead to the events described in the kit”

“As I Saw It is one of the best resources I've found. We really enjoyed being able to look at an aspect of history from multiple points of view. Learning that for every event that happens, people will have different perspectives on it. This kit created a lot of valuable discussion amongst the children in my class.”

“This resource fully engaged my class. They enjoyed being explorers and learning about NZ in another time. Researching a topic has shown them another skill they have acquired through this task. I would like to see more topics about NZ history provided in this manner for schools.”
