Bomb Gone! Nuclear Free Pacific

Steering our own course

The Kit.

Year 7-10 students. This is a Pasifika story, and one that includes all New Zealanders. It represents a time in New Zealand’s history when all New Zealanders shared a common stance and a sense of what it means to be a New Zealander. New Zealand’s role in the Pacific and the evolution of a national identity have very much been shaped by the country’s nuclear-free stand, helping New Zealand establish its own voice and sense of identity as a nation in the Pacific, determining its own foreign and defence policies.

This allows for multi-perspectives to be examined. It illustrates a fascinating time in New Zealand’s history as the nation moved from support of nuclear power and thermonuclear testing via the United Kingdom’s Operation Grapple to the protest of French nuclear testing at Mururoa Atoll within a 15-year period, reflecting a strong change in cultural and political attitudes.

What people are saying.

Putting ourselves in their shoes

“This has helped us understand the people that were in the navy at the time and their own experiences. We have been able to put ourselves in their shoes and experience what they experienced and how this has shaped our nuclear-free stance.”

Exploring Aotearoa’s History

Students had very little awareness of this part of NZ's history. They now have a good base understanding of events. They enjoyed comparing the different year clusters in the timeline and how different the advertising was in each era.
