Write Your Own Story - Get NZ Writing 2019

Get NZ writing is back in town for 2019 and this year our aim is to have every student involved to use one of the 13 items contained in your kit’s story tin to write one of 96,000 completely unique poems.

The poem must follow the postcard’s 18 word structure - (Title) 2, 4, 5, 4, 3 (Item Name).

The poem must follow the postcard’s 18 word structure - (Title) 2, 4, 5, 4, 3 (Item Name).

First things first - this can only work if as teachers we demonstrate being excited about words in front of our students. Show your kids that you love words - the sound of them, the shape of them, the taste of them. Experiment with unfamiliar words, discover new words and invent previously unheard of ones.

Your final 18 words need to follow the poem’s predetermined structure - (Title) 2 words, 4 words, 5 words, 4 words, 3 words (Item Name).

This grand experiment will only work if we show our students how much words can do. A key part of writing your own proem is being comfortable to play around with words. It’s a great idea to have students write out their words on post it notes or scraps of paper. It allows students to physically move words around until they have found the right combination.

If your post-it note budget does not allow you to provide a million bits of sticky paper to your students we suggest you try using a free tool such as note.ly to create a digital post-it note for each word.
